Welcome to the MacNeill Blog.

In an effort to strengthen the partnership between school and home, I have created this Blog (web log/journal) that will highlight many MacNeill events and the accomplishments of those in our school community. There are so many things that happen on a daily basis at MacNeill and I hope this blog will give you a greater understanding of your child's school experience. I will also be posting my personal perspective on various educational issues in an effort to stimulate thought, promote reflection and create meaningful discussions. The blog will be updated frequently. Parents, Teachers and Students are encouraged to visit the blog on a regular basis and to read, learn, comment and share in our journey throughout the year.

POWER Pep Rally

Talk about starting off the year in a POWERful way!  We had our first POWER Pep Rally to celebrate the start of another year for our POWER program.  POWER is an acronym for:

P   = Positive Attitude (participate enthusiastically)
0     = Ownership (being accountable)
W  = We not Me (being safe, empathetic and welcoming - think about others)
E    = Excellence (strive to do our best)
R    = Respect (caring for self, others and our environment)

In 2009, the MacNeill staff and students collaborated to built our POWER rubric.  This has become our school code of conduct and clearly represents the behaviors and work habits that we value and encourage in our school.

All students in the school received a POWER T-shirt, and each advisory class was assigned to one of the POWER attributes.  There was a buzz in the gym as the students entered the gym wearing their coloured shirts.  They sat in their colour groups and looked great.

We introduced all the staff and then were treated to a performance by one of our school dance teams.  They were dynamic and energetic, and did a great job building the energy in the gym.  The students in the bleachers were a great audience, showing POWERful behavior and exhibiting great school spirit.

We showed a short video called "Pulling Together - 10 Rules for High Performance Teamwork" which is a powerful symbolic representation of how MacNeill staff and students need to work together to achieve great success.  The video is below and is worth your time (3:11) to watch:

We re-introduced POWER cards, which are cards that students randomly receive when they are noticed displaying POWERful attributes at school.  Students can deposit their POWER cards into the 'Tower of Power' (a collection box in the main office), and we have weekly draws for prizes.  Many students earn power cards each week and we are proud of their effort and appreciate their actions.

Next week, advisory teachers will be focusing on one POWER attribute each day to reinforce and clarify what we stand for at MacNeill.

This POWER pep rally set the tone for a great year and we want to build upon this great start as the year progresses.
